More people are taking leaves from work for mental health reasons, despite concerns about stigma and career impact. The Family and Medical Leave Act allows employees at larger organizations to take up to 12 weeks of leave for serious health conditions, and some employers offer short-term disability plans.

More than 80% of 1,000 women surveyed in the US said they soften their communication style at work, a practice known as code switching. Women often alter their communication style to avoid being perceived as overly direct or intense, but the practice can affect productivity and career progression, researchers say. "I think it's a fear we've put onto ourselves," said Nicole Baudry, director of business development at Think Shift.

A survey revealed gaps in enrollees' understanding about health insurance, especially regarding prescription copays and out-of-pocket limits. The survey also found low usage of employee benefit guides during open enrollment season. Additionally, although around 40% of respondents use technology that can sense or track health metrics, few share that data with their health insurers or health care professionals.

Embrace the journey of questioning
(Tim Robberts/Getty Images)
In 1903, Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke received a letter from Franz Kappus, a young aspiring poet. Rilke's response to Kappus' inquiries about life and love has resonated with many over the years. Welcome to Friday Faves! Every Friday, I spotlight books, podcasts, articles, email newsletters, documentaries or other content pieces that I enjoy. I also share suggestions that I get from you. Got a favorite for your peers? Send it to me. I may include it here for a future column.

This week kicked my tail. Two huge, back-to-back projects pushed my writing and creative muscles to their max, leaving me exhausted at the end of each day. It felt good, though. Productivity is satisfying.

But being productive calls for energy, mentally and physically. Being “on” all day is grueling -- meetings, collaborating, brainstorming, thinking on your feet.

The only way I can do that is by fueling up my own spirit. Reading my bible. Praying throughout the day. Thinking about what I’ve read -- meditating on it -- and letting it course through my head and heart.

This week’s Friday Fave is a book I’ve been reading about biblical meditation. It’s been fascinating. The book takes a deep dive into the practices of the Puritans, detailing why meditation is important and how to do it. I’ve really enjoyed the practical and spiritual gains from it.

Our work is hard. We have to feed our spirits daily. It’s as important -- if not more! -- as exercise and good nutrition.

How do you keep your spirit healthy? Let me know! I'd love to hear.

Do you enjoy this brief? Share it with others. Want different stories? Something about it bug you? Tell me. In the words of Frasier Crane, “I’m listening.”
